Styling Concept for an Advanced Cockpit Design

The production version of the CR-Z's interior is derived from the CR-Z Concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. Fashioned around the concept of "premium small," the interior offers an exciting coupe style. Primary objectives were to provide a high-quality look and feel consistent with a premium vehicle, create generous amounts of useful space relative to its compact exterior size, and illustrate the CR-Z's fun-to-drive experience on the inside.

Instrument Panel, Center Stack and Glove Box

The instrument panel features a deeply sculpted design to create the sensation of depth and expansiveness. A variety of design techniques were used to enhance the feeling of width and space to express a premium, high-tech and sporty quality. The inset sculpting of the instrument panel brings all of the controls and storage areas closer to the driver. Intuitively grouped controls for the audio, climate, 3-mode drive system buttons and available navigation system are designed to operate with solidity and precision. A prominent three-dimensional tachometer dominates the instrument meter cluster and houses a 3-digit digital speedometer, flanked on either side by specialized hybrid meters and conventional readouts for fuel, and other important vehicle information.

A thoughtfully engineered center stack provides convenient storage areas for mobile phones and digital media devices, along with USB connectivity, an auxiliary audio input jack and a 12V DC power outlet. An upper instrument panel storage area provides sufficient space for a pair of sunglasses and features a damped lid for smooth operation and a rubber mat to prevent noise. A center lower instrument panel storage area (just below the radio) includes a lid and is designed to hold digital media devices. The interior of the storage area includes a USB interface. The 12V DC power outlet and the auxiliary audio input jack on navigation-equipped models are located just below the lid. Models with a conventional radio have an auxiliary audio input jack on the audio system faceplate. Plugging a portable audio device into the aux-in jack automatically sets the volume at a preset level; when the device is unplugged, the volume resets to its previous level.

A conventional glove box is located in front of the passenger and opens smoothly with help from a damper and features an HVAC vent opening and a dedicated pen holder. The HVAC opening will divert airflow from the air conditioning system and is large enough to accommodate a 16- ounce bottle of water along with other small items.

The black upper part of the instrument panel is constructed of a single layer of precision-textured, soft-feel composite material. Similar to the same process for making steering wheels, this is the first instrument panel from Honda constructed by using Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) technology in place of the more-conventional design that uses a texture layer over a substrate layer. The RIM technology can better reproduce fine details and follow designs with sharper bends. The passenger airbag lid is a seamless design with no visible parting line. The lower portion of the instrument panel (texture layer over substrate) has a three-dimensional texture in a matte gray color.

The CR-Z EX is equipped with high quality metal-coated composite trim pieces on the center stack and the door grips. A first for Honda in interior applications, the specially constructed high-gloss film is made from evaporated metal, resulting in an authentic reflective appearance and a high-quality feel. The metal evaporative coating consists of an adhesion layer, an actual evaporated-metal layer and a clear-coat layer that is applied to the parts under vacuum. The evaporative metal coating can follow more complex contours compared to metal parts and it offers greater durability compared to ordinary film coatings. Textured aluminum pedals on the CR-Z EX add to the polished look and feel of the interior.

Meter Cluster

The instrument meter cluster incorporates a multitude of conventional and hybrid-specific meters. The most prominent feature is a 3-dimensional meter containing an illumination ring that transitions color from green to blue depending on the efficient style of driving, or red if the CR-Z is in Sport mode. Green conveys efficient driving, blue conveys less efficient driving. A large, three-digit digital speedometer resides inside the tachometer ring. The area to the left of the tachometer contains a battery state-of-charge meter and IMA assist/charge meter that shows whether the electric motor is providing electric power assist or regenerative braking. The area to the right of the tachometer contains readouts for fuel level and a Multi-Information Display (MID). Manual transmission models include shift-up and shift-down arrow indicators that suggest shift points for an efficient driving style.

Eco Assist

The CR-Z offers exceptional fuel economy, and the Eco Assist™ guidance function helps drivers get improved efficient performance from the Integrated Motor Assist system. The system guides drivers in accelerating and braking in ways that consume less fuel, and in taking better advantage of regenerative braking. Using these tools, the driver can achieve improved fuel economy performance.

The primary Eco Assist feedback tool the CR-Z provides to the driver is the glowing ring inside the tachometer. Fuel-saving activities such as smooth acceleration and braking make the meter inner ring glow green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By observing the meter ring color, changing driving practices, and seeking to achieve a consistently green color, drivers can develop driving habits that typically enhance fuel economy.

Multi-Information Display (MID)

The MID contains six sub-displays that are accessible by pressing the "i" information button on the steering wheel or in the meter cluster. The information categories include:

  • IMA system power flow indicator
  • Eco Guide and Eco Scoring
  • Digital odometer and digital trip meters (2)
  • Digital fuel-mileage indicators
  • Average fuel economy, average speed and elapsed time indicators
  • Miles-to-empty indicator
  • Maintenance Minder™ system messages
  • Exterior temperature indicator

Eco Guide and Eco Scoring

Similar to the Honda Insight, the CR-Z offers an Eco Guide and Eco Scoring feature to help drivers track progress of efficient driving styles. The Eco Guide provides a sliding bar graph for real-time fuel economy feedback. The Eco Guide, located within the MID, use a shorter bar to the right to indicate a more-efficient acceleration style. A shorter bar to the left indicates a more efficient braking style.

The Eco Scoring function rates economical driving performance by the previous two trips and the current trip using graphical representations of plant leaves (accessible while driving). When the ignition switch is turned off, the leaves in the top line of the MID show the Eco Score for the just completed driving cycle (startup to shutdown). The leaves in the bottom line indicate the leaves earned for the lifetime of the vehicle and encourages drivers to take an interest in developing fuel-efficient driving habits over the long term.

Integrated Motor Assist Operation Schematic

The Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) schematic shows flow of energy from the engine and/or the IMA battery pack. A diagram of the vehicle receives positive energy flow from the gasoline pump graphic when the engine is operating and it receives positive or negative energy flow from the battery icon. Positive or negative energy flow from the battery represents either IMA power assist or IMA regenerative braking.

Steering Wheel

The three-spoke steering wheel on the CR-Z (leather wrapped on the CR-Z EX) is intended to create a sporty feeling. Steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise-control buttons include Mode, Volume and Channel, plus Cruise, Cancel, Set/Decelerate and Resume/Accelerate. CR-Z EX models add buttons for the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® telephone interface. In CR-Z EX models equipped with the navigation system, the steering wheel also provides buttons for the navigation voice-control activation. The tilt-and-telescope range for the steering column, along with seat height adjustment range, is designed to enhance the comfort of an extensive variety of driver sizes. CR-Z models equipped with the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) provide two paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for manual control of the CVT ratios.

Manual Transmission Shifter Design and Geometry

Honda manual transmissions are known for their short, direct and precise shifts. The CR-Z shifter location was configured for comfortable, sporty operation that falls naturally to the hand by optimizing the vertical and horizontal distances from the driver's shoulder with the stroke of the shifter. Designed to convey the look and feel of premium quality, the CR-Z EX is equipped with a leather-wrapped aluminum shift knob that has blueengraved gear positions. The blue emphasizes the hybrid aspect of the powertrain.

Versatile Cargo Area and Rear Cargo Console

The cargo area of the CR-Z provides up to 25.1 cubic feet of luggage capacity. A rear cargo console resides behind the front seats and provides a hidden storage area with a two-zone tray built into the floor. The area is ideal for items like a duffle bag, a laptop computer, or similar items. When closed, the rear cover creates a flat floor with a length of 50.3 inches (1280 mm) and a width of 38.9 inches (990 mm). The cover of the rear cargo console is hinged between the wheel wells and uses a damper for smooth movement. When the cargo cover is in the up position, it acts as a separator that locks into place and divides the cargo area between the rear wheel wells to create a front and rear cargo zone. When opened, the rear cargo zone length measures 30.3 inches (770 mm) with an approximate cargo volume of 10.1 cubic feet. An additional small storage area is located under the rear cargo floor above the spare tire, amounting to 0.6 cubic feet (2.0 liters). The latch at the center of the rear cargo cover allows the driver or passenger to easily reach back and open or close the cover for convenient access to items.

Retractable Cargo Area Cover

A removable and retractable cargo area cover is standard equipment. The cross bar spans the rear wheel wells and the spring-loaded retractable cover connects to the back of the rear cargo area. The cover can retract into the crossbar. The crossbar can be removed and stored on the floor when not in use.

Automatic Climate Control

The CR-Z is equipped with a highefficiency automatic climate control system as standard equipment. Operated by two large easy-to-use dials, the system has an "Automatic" mode that varies fan power, air distribution and controls the temperature inside the vehicle according to sensor readings inside and outside the vehicle. The climate control integrates with the IMA hybrid system to enhance economical operation when the air conditioner is in use during idlestop mode and when in Econ mode.

Silver Mesh Sport Seats

The silver mesh sport seats of the CR-Z offer supportive seat construction consistent with the needs of an enthusiast driver. An innovative active head restraint system enhances the seat's ability to minimize the likelihood of a neck injury in the event of a rear collision. Both front seats manually recline and move forward and back. The driver's seat features a manual height adjustment control with two inches total of up and down travel. A ratchet-style lever on the left side of the seat base adjusts the seat up or down in increments. High-strength steel comprises the majority of the seats' internal framework. Composite components are used in the base and the seatback to minimize weight and proactively influence seat cushion feedback. The foam cushions employ various densities in the bolsters compared to other areas in the seat to provide an optimal level of comfort (softness) and support (firmness) for the CR-Z. To accommodate drivers of different sizes and body shapes, the seats' side bolsters are formed from a separate piece and integrate a strategic support wire to increase stiffness as appropriate for larger people or smaller people. Larger persons are held in place by the outer portion of the side support. Smaller persons receive the benefit of the strategic support wire working on the inner portion of the bolster for excellent lateral support.

Audio System

The CR-Z features a 6-speaker, 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack for connection to a portable audio player, and all models include a USB audio interface6 for connecting an iPod7 or other compatible audio device. Other audio features include speedsensitive volume control, which automatically adjusts the volume based on vehicle speed, and CD/MP3 text readout. The radio data system shows supplemental programming information from participating radio stations while also offering search-by-genre capability (not available on the CR-Z EX with navigation).

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™8 is available on the CR-Z EX model and features a 6.5-inch display that opens and closes for access to the internal CD player slot, a USB audio interface, and a digital audio card reader that can play MP3 and WMA files from SD, CompactFlash™, and Flash ATA memory cards (PCM adapter required for all cards). The navigation system features more than 7 million points of interest and integrates the audio system. The voice recognition feature is capable of recognizing and inputting numbers, street names and cities, in addition to more than 600 commands.

6 The USB Audio Interface is used for direct connection to and control of some current digital audio players and other USB devices that contain MP3, WMA or AAC music files. Honda navigation systems have long been recognized for their simple, intuitive operation and extensive on-board database. When navigating freeways, a split screen design enhances onscreen information with a "map view" and "3-D" route visualization of freeways simultaneouslywhich helps make navigation information easier to understand. The system is integrated with the car's audio system, so driving instructions can be heard over the speaker system, and the voice recognition feature adds hands-free control to the navigation system.

The Honda Satellite-Linked DVD Navigation System uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's DVD-based mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

Turn-by-turn voice guidance is user selectable in either male or female voice and can be turned off at any time. Destination memory recalls current trip addresses and previous destinations; and calendar and calculator with English to metric number converter is standard.

The navigation system can be controlled by the driver through either the voice recognition feature, the touch screen display, or by the joystick on the instrument panel. The voice recognition feature works when the "talk" button, located on the steering wheel, is depressed. When spoken to, the system recognizes commands such as "find nearest gas station," or "find nearest ATM" and can also recognize street names.

The 6.5-inch LCD display is a touch screen (TFT, resistive film) that allows the driver or front passenger to choose menu options or spell out a word (i.e. address, business name, place, etc.) through a touch-sensitive keypad. The keypad can be set to alphabetical or a QWERTY typewriter-style layout. Alternatively, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word. A matte finish is used on the display to reduce glare and smudging. When disc loading is selected for the CD player, the motorized screen tilts down to allow access to the CD loader located behind the screen.

For data storage, the system uses a single DVD (located below CD player) that contains information for the entire United States. Future updates to the navigation system can be made by installing an updated DVD (available on-line or by calling a toll free number provided in the owner's manual).

Bluetooth HandsFreeLink

Standard on the CR-Z EX, the Bluetooth®9 HandsFreeLink® hands-free phone interface is designed to work with many Bluetooth® enabled mobile phones. The system uses radio frequencies to connect the driver's mobile phone to the audio system in the vehicle. This allows the driver to make or answer mobile-phone calls without taking his or her hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth enabled mobile phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP).

Bluetooth HandsFreeLink is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a one-time "pairing" process to link the mobile phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's mobile phone when the phone is within about 30 feet of the car. Once the driver enters the car, he or she simply stores the phone in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle's cabin and the call transfers through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible mobile phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the navigation system through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred into the navigation system, calls can be made by making selections from the registered phonebook on the information screen in the navigation system.

Operational features include:

  • Telephone ring tone plays over the audio system for incoming calls
  • Phone numbers of incoming calls are displayed on the Multi-Information Display
  • Pressing the steering wheel-mounted "answer" button connects the call and mutes the audio system
  • Caller is heard through the audio-system speakers
  • One overhead microphone picks up the driver's voice clearly while minimizing background noise and echoing
  • To make a call hands free, the driver first activates the system using the steering wheelmounted controls, then "dials" the number by voice
  • Numbers with voice tags may be stored in the system's memory phonebook
  • Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink system at one time
