New Dry-Gas V-Twins Expand Honda's Engine Lineup

In order to meet increasing demand for gaseous-fueled power plants, Honda has developed two dry-gas V-twin engines of 620 and 670 cubic centimeter displacement. When used in conjunction with the new T202ANL-620/670 fuel system module developed in partnership with IMPCO Technologies Inc., the new Honda GX620K1 and GX670 engines can operate on either propane or natural gas.

"As Honda continually strives to maintain technological and environmental leadership, this is the next logical step for us," said Scott Conner, Honda Engines senior manager. "The alternative-fueled standby generator market is growing, and it is a good fit with Honda values."

Advantages of gaseous dry-fuels like propane or natural gas over gasoline include improved fuel economy, reduced emissions (especially CO2), and increased engine durability. Additionally, many residences and commercial locations already have propane or natural gas infrastructure, making these fuels readily available and cost effective.

The cylinder heads of the GX620K1 and GX670 have been redesigned to meet the demands of gaseous fuel operation, and a two-barrel mixer specifically designed for gaseous carburetion of the V-twins takes the place of a traditional carburetor. All engines are equipped with an oil-cooler adapter on the oil filter base, and offer an available factory-installed oil cooler to optimize oil temperatures.

A fuel delivery unit from IMPCO that modulates the flow of fuel from the source to the engine consists of the following:

  • Regulator
  • 2 fuel lock-off valves
  • T-joint assembly with main jets for natural gas and LPG
  • 40-inch inlet hose assembly

The T-joint allows the use of either propane or natural gas, depending on which outlet of the "T" is connected to the engine.

As with their conventional Honda counterparts, the dry-gas engines utilize a 90° V-twin OHV format featuring an advanced combustion chamber design and superior intake and exhaust efficiency to maximize power and fuel economy. To reduce operating costs, Honda utilizes a unique breather design and three-piece oil ring that improves oil circulation efficiency for lower oil consumption.

Honda GX620K1 and GX670 engines deliver a noise advantage over the competition through the use of cam and oil pump gears made of a lightweight, durable and heat-resistant resin that minimizes gear-meshing noise. Quiet operation is further optimized with irregular-pitch fan blades and a plastic resin fan cover.
