HIGH PERFORMANCE POWERTRAIN
Under the rakish hood of the 2003 3.2 TL and TL Type-S are two
variants of Acura's 3.2-liter, 24-valve, VTEC V-6 powerplant. The
3.2
TL's engine delivers 225 horsepower at 5600 rpm and a broad
torque
curve with peak output of 216 lb-ft. at 4700 rpm. The
high-performance TL Type-S engine uses a dual-stage induction
system
and numerous other performance enhancements to boost
horsepower to
260 at 6100 rpm. The Type-S engine's maximum 232 lb-ft. of
torque is
available between 3500 rpm and 5500 rpm.
Both engines in the 2003 TL feed their power to an electronically controlled 5-speed automatic transmission equipped with the Sequential SportShift' system. Similar to the transmission first unveiled in the exotic Acura NSX sports car, the Sequential SportShift system allows the driver to shift gears semi-manually simply by moving the shift lever fore or aft in a special SportShift gate. If the driver prefers, the transmission also offers the shifting convenience of a conventional automatic. Additionally, the transmission is equipped with Grade Logic Control programming for enhanced shifting smoothness and reduced gear "hunting" when climbing or descending steep grades.
The 3.2 TL powertrain's impressive power output does not come at the expense of vehicle emissions. Both the 3.2 TL and TL Type-S meet stringent Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standards, while California models (3.2 TL only) comply with Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standards.
GLOBAL MIDSIZE PLATFORM
The unit-body of the '03 TL is based on the Global Midsize
Platform
(also shared with the Acura CL coupe), which positions the
front-drive powertrain in a transverse orientation for maximum
cabin
volume and optimum weight distribution. To reduce Noise,
Vibration,
and Harshness (NVH), the front and rear suspensions are
carried on
isolated subframes - resulting in exceedingly low interior noise
levels. Insulation material in the doors provides additional noise
isolation. Gap-filling foam in the side pillars helps seal the pillar
cavities from further noise intrusions. Computer-designed cabin
reinforcements and specially designed crumple zones in the
front and
rear help protect the passenger cabin in the event of an impact.
The
TL's fully independent, double-wishbone suspension system
includes
large wheels and tires (16-inch on the TL; 17-inch on the TL
Type-S)
for reassuringly secure handling. The compact, multi-link,
double-wishbone rear suspension contributes to the exceptional
spaciousness of the TL cabin and trunk.
ABUNDANT STANDARD LUXURIES AND
CONVENIENCES
The automotive press and the public have praised the TL for its
long
list of standard luxury equipment, and the 2003 edition continues
in
this class-leading tradition. From a leather-trimmed interior with
heated front seats to a power moonroof, keyless entry system,
and an
Acura/Bose® Music System with an in-dash, 6-disc CD changer,
the TL
is designed to provide a truly comprehensive array of fine
amenities
as standard equipment.
The TL also offers the optional Acura Navigation System, which provides satellite-linked nationwide coverage through a DVD on-board database that lists information on 3.7 million points of interest. In fall of 2002, the TL will receive two new exterior colors with Desert Mist replacing Naples Gold and Royal Ruby replacing Firepepper Red.
SPORTY AND SPACIOUS INTERIOR
The 2003 Acura 3.2 TL provides ample room for both
passengers and
cargo, thanks in part to a generous 108.1-inch wheelbase. With
an
interior totaling 110.5 cubic feet in volume, the TL is officially
classified by the EPA in the midsize class. Most of the TL's
competitors, in contrast, are classified as compact cars.
Large analog gauges and important switches are grouped around the steering wheel for intuitive operation. A generous greenhouse provides superb visibility. Rich, hand-selected leather graces the seats and interior trim, while the cabin is further refined with elegant wood-patterned accents. Befitting its sportier role, the 3.2 TL Type-S cockpit is equipped with racy perforated-leather sport seats, a perforated-leather steering wheel and shifter, a Type-S emblem on the shift knob, and metallic-face gauges.
2003 Acura 3.2 TL - Powertrain
OVERVIEW
The 3.2 TL is powered by an all-aluminum, 3.2-liter V-6 that uses
24
valves and Acura's innovative VTEC system to deliver 225
horsepower
and 216 lb-ft. of torque. The V-6 in the high-performance TL
Type-S
model builds upon this potent foundation by adding a high-flow,
dual-stage induction system and a free-flowing exhaust - which
help
boost output to 260 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque.
In each engine, Acura's patented VTEC system - first unveiled on the NSX exotic sports car - helps provide an exceptionally flat torque curve, enhanced engine breathing, and superb responsiveness at all engine speeds.
Both the TL and the TL Type-S are equipped with an electronically controlled, 5-speed Sequential SportShift transmission. Inspired by the transmissions used on modern Formula One race cars, Sequential SportShift allows the driver to shift the forward gears semi-manually - without the need for a clutch pedal. The transmission also offers the shifting convenience of a conventional automatic.
In keeping with Acura's commitment to the environment, both TL engines meet stringent Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) standards. The California-model 3.2 TL also meets Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) requirements.

ENGINE ARCHITECTURE
The TL features a sophisticated, 24-valve, 3.2-liter V-6 engine. In
addition to its lightweight, all-aluminum construction and
compact,
smooth-firing, 60-degree layout, the engine incorporates such
state-of-the-art technologies as the VTEC system and a
high-flow
induction system to combine prodigious power with smooth,
refined
operation. In addition, the high-performance Type-S V-6 uses a
unique, dual-stage induction system to boost output to 260
horsepower.
ENGINE BLOCK
The compact, aluminum engine block of the TL V-6 is die-cast
and
heat-treated for exceptional rigidity and minimal resonant
vibration.
The engine's iron cylinder liners have their bore pitch set at a
close 98-mm spacing to reduce overall engine size. The
free-revving
TL engine is oversquare with a bore of 89 mm and a stroke of 86
mm -
yielding a total displacement of 3210 cc.
The TL employs an engine cylinder bank V-angle of 60 degrees for improved smoothness and compact size. The block has an unusually short deck height, resulting in an overall reduction in the height and width of the assembled engine.
While both TL models have iron cylinder inserts, the Type-S engine adds unique spin-cast cylinder-wall liners that are cast into the engine block during the initial manufacturing phase. These spin-cast liners are lighter than traditional iron liners - and also improve heat dissipation to avoid engine knocking. Because they require fewer machined surfaces, spin-cast cylinder liners also simplify the production process.
CYLINDER HEAD
The powerful TL engines incorporate pressure-cast, aluminum
alloy
cylinder heads with four-valves-per-cylinder, compact
combustion
chambers, and a generous squish area to promote swirl and
enhance
combustion efficiency. For enhanced flow into the combustion
chamber,
the Type-S engine has specially designed, race-bred intake
valves.
The single overhead camshaft in each cylinder head is installed
from
the timing belt side of the engine, saving weight and complexity
by
eliminating the need for bolt-on cam caps. The cams are driven
by the
crankshaft via a fiberglass-reinforced, toothed timing belt and
use
friction-reducing roller followers to activate the valves.
CRANKSHAFT/CONNECTING RODS/PISTONS
Of paramount importance in designing the TL's V-6 was the goal
of
compact overall engine dimensions. The TL engine uses a rigid,
forged
crankshaft and narrow 19 mm connecting rods to reduce engine
length
and width. Rather than conventional nut-and-bolt type fasteners,
the
connecting rods in the TL V-6 use lightweight bolts (without nuts)
called plastic-region fasteners. The rod bolts thread directly into
the connecting rod allowing the bolts to be smaller while
retaining
the required clamping force and strength margins.
The V-6's compact pistons are made of lightweight, cast-aluminum alloy. A unique dome-shaped design provides maximum combustion efficiency in each combustion chamber. The compression ratio is 9.8:1 in the 3.2 TL and 10.5:1 in the Type-S due to a taller piston dome. The pistons utilize a 3-ring design with the Type-S engine incorporating a unique angled top ring for an improved seal within the cylinder to accommodate the higher combustion pressure.
VARIABLE VALVE TIMING AND LIFT ELECTRONIC
CONTROL (VTEC)
First unveiled on the Acura NSX supercar, the innovative Variable
Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system is a key
player in the TL engine's remarkable combination of low end
torque,
high-rpm horsepower, fuel efficiency and low exhaust
emissions.
Unlike engines with conventional fixed-timing intake valves, the TL's VTEC engines automatically optimize the intake valve settings for either low or high-rpm operation. By altering the lift and opening duration of the intake valves depending on engine rpm, VTEC helps the engine produce abundant low- and mid-range torque with no sacrifice in high-rpm power. At high rpm the VTEC V-6 produces considerably more horsepower than other engines of its size.
At low rpm, the VTEC intake valves follow a set of low-lift, short-duration cam lobes with timing that optimizes cylinder filling. In addition, the timing of the intake valves is staggered and their lift asymmetric - creating a swirl effect within the combustion chambers at lower RPM. The result is increased burn speed with improved combustion stability and an increase in allowable EGR rate. As the engine spins through 4400 rpm (4800 rpm on the Type-S), the intake rocker arms transition to actuation by high-lift, long-duration cam lobes designed to optimize high-rpm output.
On the Type-S, high-performance camshafts further increase power output by providing longer intake-valve duration, more valve overlap, and additional lift for the exhaust valves.
DUAL-STAGE INDUCTION SYSTEM
Found only on the Type-S engine, this revolutionary dual-stage
induction system is a major contributor to producing the V-6's
robust
260 horsepower. At its heart, the system uses a large,
two-chamber
intake plenum separated by an electronically actuated butterfly
valve, which opens at 3800 rpm.
At low and mid-range engine speeds, the valve is closed - creating a Resonance Charge condition where pressure pulsations between cylinders banks are separated. In doing so, air filling the cylinders increases with the resonance energy from the adjoining cylinder of each bank (Helmholtz principle).
At mid to high engine rpm, an electric motor opens the butterfly valve and an Inertia Charge condition is achieved. Increased air filling then occurs when the manifold volume is increased and the resonance charge condition is eliminated. This phenomenon utilizes the high flow mass to pressurize the manifold port air, producing a natural "supercharger" effect.
The increased airflow and improved cylinder filling is the fundamental reason for the engine's efficient combustion and increased power. Additional improvements include a larger 64-mm bore throttle body (which reduces air-intake restriction and increases total air flow volume), free flow exhaust, and a low-overall restriction air intake system with a free flow air filter and air flow tube.
PROGRAMMED FUEL INJECTION (PGM-FI)
A Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system controlled by a
16-bit,
32 MHz Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The PCM utilizes
position
sensors on the crankshaft and both camshafts to monitor many
variables including throttle position, engine temperature, intake
manifold pressure, atmospheric pressure, exhaust gas oxygen
content,
and intake air temperature. The PGM-FI system controls fuel
delivery
by six injectors mounted in the cast aluminum, tuned-length
intake
manifold.
EXHAUST SYSTEM
The lightweight, high-flow, dual-exhaust system in the 2003 TL is
designed for low-restriction performance with minimal noise and
vibration. The high-output Type-S engine has a larger-diameter
exhaust pipe, an increased-flow, low-restriction catalytic
converter,
and ultra-high-flow capacity dual silencers. The result is a 30
percent increase in exhaust gas flow compared with the 3.2 TL.
The
Type-S also boasts an aggressive, performance-oriented
exhaust note
that settles into a subdued tone at cruising speeds. Both the 3.2
TL
and the TL Type-S meet LEV standards while the
California-edition 3.2
meets ULEV standards
DIRECT IGNITION SYSTEM/KNOCK CONTROL
While proper ignition timing is critical to optimized engine
performance and emission control, proper timing depends on
many
variables and constantly changes from moment to moment. If
there is
not enough spark advance, fuel efficiency suffers. If there is too
much advance, engine knock or even engine damage may
occur. The TL is
equipped with a new-generation knock-control system. Using a
centrally located engine-block sensor that "hears" the onset of
knocking, the system can advance ignition timing to the point of
peak
efficiency - without going beyond. The system is even able to
adapt
if the quality of fuel used is less than the specified unleaded
premium.
The ignition system further benefits from compact and reliable direct-ignition coil units, which are positioned directly in the spark plug access bores.
NOISE, VIBRATION, AND HARSHNESS (NVH)
CONTROL
In addition to power and fuel efficiency, the TL powertrain was
engineered for superb smoothness and noise control. To that
end, the
TL's V-6 engines incorporate such NVH-reducing features as a
rigid
aluminum block with an unusually high resonant frequency, a
rigid
forged crankshaft, die-cast accessory mounts, and a stiff,
cast-aluminum oil pan.
105,000-MILE TUNE-UP INTERVALS
For the first 105,000 miles, the TL engines require only routine
inspections and fluid and filter changes. Thanks to the
roller-follower design of the VTEC valvetrain, friction and wear
are
reduced to the point that the screw-type tappet clearance
adjusters
need not be checked until the 105,000-mile mark. At that point,
the
long-life, platinum-tipped spark plugs are also scheduled for
replacement.
DIRECT-ACTING CRUISE CONTROL
For relaxed highway cruising, the TL is equipped with a
sophisticated
electronic cruise-control system. When engaged, the system's
Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is able to command the
5-speed
transmission directly, summoning downshifts as required to
help
maintain the driver's preset road speed even when climbing
steep
grades. For added convenience, the cruise control is operated
using
buttons on the steering wheel. Using these buttons, the driver
can
adjust road speed up or down in one mph increments or
disengage the
cruise-control system without touching the brake pedal.
5-SPEED, SEQUENTIAL SPORTSHIFT' AUTOMATIC
TRANSMISSION
The TL features a 5-speed automatic transmission with an
advanced
Sequential SportShift feature as standard equipment. Inspired by
the
transmissions found on contemporary Formula One Grand Prix
racecars,
Sequential SportShift allows the driver to choose the
convenience of
a conventional automatic or shift gears semi-manually. To do the
latter, the driver places the gear lever in a special SportShift gate
to the left of the D5 position and then simply moves the lever fore
or aft to shift up or down. The selected gear is displayed on an
LED
indicator inside the tachometer face.
To improve the immediacy and "manual-transmission feel" of the shifting experience in SportShift mode, the transmission computer commands shifts that are firmer and approximately 10 percent quicker than those in automatic mode. At the same time, the SportShift system incorporates built-in safety-override features unavailable with a conventional manual transmission. For instance, the transmission logic will not allow a downshift that would cause the engine to over-rev.
The TL's 5-speed automatic transmission figures heavily in measured performance gains and performance driving feel. Its gear ratio settings closely match the demands of a variety of driving situations. The wide ratio transmission's lower gears provide quick acceleration while the tall top gear ratio results in low cruising rpm's for reduced engine noise and lower fuel consumption.
Thanks to a design that shares the idler and third-gear clutches, the TL's transmission provides five ratios in a unit about the size of a conventional 4-speed transmission. The transmission also incorporates a first gear one-way clutch for smoother shifts, plus an innovative heat exchanger design that moderates transmission operating temperature quickly and without undue complexity.
Linear solenoids provide precise, real-time control of the clutch on/off pressure in the TL's transmission. Thanks to this superior clutch-engagement accuracy, the control logic system operates smoothly under all conditions. For added refinement, a bearing supports the idler shaft.
To manage overall powertrain operation, the PCM interacts with multiple control strategies. For instance, by limiting engine output torque and/or transmission clutch pressure, harsh driveline shocks are eliminated. The system also prevents the engine from exceeding 5000 rpm when the transmission is in neutral or park.
GRADE LOGIC CONTROL
To improve powertrain smoothness and reduce gear "hunting"
on steep
grades, the 5-speed automatic transmission is equipped with a
standard Grade Logic Control system. Using sensors that
monitor
throttle position, vehicle speed, and acceleration/deceleration
the
system compares these inputs with a map stored in the
transmission
computer, determines when the vehicle is on an incline and
adjusts
the automatic shift schedule for improved climbing power or
downhill
engine braking.
2003 Acura 3.2 TL - Chassis
OVERVIEW
The TL was built with the ambitious goal of providing world-class
refinement and exceptional handling performance. It is built on
the
Global Midsize Platform, a front-drive platform that combines the
packaging efficiency and handling stability of a transversely
mounted
front-drive powertrain with Acura's latest chassis and
suspension
advances.
The chassis architecture of the TL has been carefully designed to provide the crisp handling dynamics demanded by driving enthusiasts and the world-class ride refinement expected by drivers of mid-luxury sedans. The TL employs front and rear suspension subframes and carries its engine on electronically-controlled hydraulic mounts. The 4-wheel independent suspension system benefits from geometric refinements that reduce understeer at the limit of adhesion and improve the TL's responsiveness. Standard 16-inch wheels on the TL and 17-inch wheels on the Type-S provide exceptional cornering grip.
The Type-S model's suspension has been tuned to provide even more exceptional handling, incorporating a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar, stiffer front and rear springs, more compression and rebound damping, and longer front bump stops.

FRONT SUSPENSION
The 3.2 TL utilizes a race-proven, double-wishbone suspension
layout
for exacting wheel-motion control. The front suspension has
been
carefully designed to exploit the stiffness of the front subframe,
while the TL's low 57-mm roll center further contributes to the
car's
precise and linear handling.
To suit its more athletic demeanor, the Type-S front suspension is tuned for even greater handling performance. Revisions to the suspension include stiffer springs, a 10 percent increase in the damping rates, and a 20-mm longer bumpstop. These enhancements help the car maintain an optimum stance during cornering for superb handling and responsiveness.
REAR SUSPENSION
At the rear, the TL's multi-link suspension layout has been
designed
for rewarding handling and a fluid ride without sacrificing cabin
or
trunk room.
Compact, high-tension steel suspension links reduce unsprung weight for enhanced damping control. The suspension geometry is designed to carry the rear wheels through a path that is angled rearward to improve bump compliance. This sophisticated geometry also provides a much straighter toe curve, meaning that during suspension motion there is a controlled amount of "rear steer." Pillow joints help control side-force steer while reducing component friction - improving ride comfort.
In the high-performance Type-S, the rear suspension - like the front - is tuned with stiffer springs, higher compression and rebound damping and a larger-diameter rear stabilizer bar for reduced body roll during cornering.
FRONT AND REAR SUBFRAMES
Stout front and rear subframes improve the TL's chassis rigidity
and
help curb NVH. In the front, a perimeter frame - consisting of a
front member, side members and a rear bulkhead beam -
significantly
improves chassis stiffness while also enhancing front-impact
crash
protection.
The rear subframe also utilizes a large perimeter frame, consisting of robust cross-section members and smaller stringers that locate the rear suspension and house the fuel tank.
Both the front and rear subframes are mounted to the body with rubber isolators that help dampen vibration by as much as 5 db in the low- and mid-frequency ranges.
HYDRAULIC ENGINE MOUNTS
To enhance the world-class refinement of the TL even further,
the V-6
engine is mounted to the subframe with two electronically
controlled,
hydraulic engine mounts and a side stopper mount. The
hydraulic
mounts help to isolate the cabin from engine vibration. To do so,
each mount controls fluid transfer between two internal hydraulic
chambers, thereby altering the mount's damping frequency and
helping
to counter any engine vibration.
STEERING
To deliver both the smooth refinement of a premium luxury
automobile
and the rewarding response of an athletic sports sedan - the 3.2
TL
and the TL Type-S are equipped with unique power-steering
systems.
The 3.2 TL features a speed-sensitive, variable power assist system designed to complement the model's handling characteristics.
By varying the amount of power assist according to vehicle speed, the system provides light steering effort during low-speed parking maneuvers and, as vehicle speed increases, progressively heavier steering effort for a positive and secure feel.
The TL Type-S is equipped with an exclusive sport-tuned, power steering system (similar to the CL Type-S). The Type-S uses a torque-sensing rotary valve steering gear that varies the amount of assist according to steering input and the resultant torque generated between the pavement and tire. The system also varies assist based on engine speed, helping make steering light in parking maneuvers and heavier as speed increases for enhanced road feel.
The steering column is insulated from intrusive road harshness by a rubber coupling.
BRAKING SYSTEM
For superb braking power and excellent resistance to fade, the
TL is
equipped with 11.8-inch (300 mm) ventilated front brake rotors
and
11.1-inch (282 mm) rotors at the rear. Rigid front calipers help
provide crisp, responsive pedal feel, while system-wide tuning of
the
brake components helps ensure linear brake-pedal action and
predictable effort.
The service and parking brakes on the rear wheels are separated for further improvements in brake performance. A drum-in-disc brake design uses the disc portion of the rear unit for braking at speed, while the drum is used only as a parking brake. The parking brake operates with a push on/push off floor pedal.
TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM (TCS)
To enhance stability and control while increasing all-weather
usability, the TL features a standard Traction Control System
(TCS).
Under acceleration, the TCS can detect wheel slip and, if
necessary,
coordinate modulated braking to help the front tires regain
traction.
Operating at vehicle speeds below 18 miles per hour, the
system can
apply one or both front brakes as necessary to control wheel
spin.
Because the system provides independent drive-wheel control, it also greatly enhances performance when accelerating on surfaces with split-traction coefficients. When starting out on split-traction surfaces (i.e., one side of the car is on dry pavement while the other side is on wet pavement), TCS can apply braking action to whichever front wheel is slipping - allowing the tire with the better grip to propel the vehicle.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)
The ABS system in the 3.2 TL is a three-channel design that
modulates
braking power to the front wheels independently and to the rear
wheels in tandem - enhancing driver control during
maximum-effort
stops on all road surfaces.
The TL Type-S is fitted with a four-channel ABS system that works in conjunction with the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. When braking in a straight line, the Type-S ABS system functions in the same three-channel mode as the 3.2 TL's. When the Type-S system senses high cornering forces, however, it automatically switches to a four-channel mode - allowing the ABS system to exploit the weight transfer to the outside of the turn and apply higher brake pressure to the outer rear wheel for enhanced braking performance.
VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA) - (TL TYPE-S)
For enhanced control during acceleration, cornering, and
sudden
collision-avoidance maneuvers, the 3.2 TL Type-S is equipped
with a
standard Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. Similar to the
system
first unveiled on the 2000 Acura 3.5 RL flagship sedan, the
Type-S's
VSA system enhances vehicle stability by applying brake force to
either front wheel as necessary while managing the throttle and
ignition systems.
Analyzing data that is constantly received from eight vehicle sensors, the VSA system compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. If the actual response is outside a predicted response range - as can happen when cornering forces exceed the tires' performance capabilities - VSA automatically intervenes with an appropriate corrective action. In the case of oversteer, VSA applies braking to the outside front wheel to counter the unintended yawing effect. If understeer is detected, VSA applies braking to the inside front wheel and reduces engine power to help bring the car back onto the driver's intended course.
The VSA system in the Type-S has been carefully calibrated to add handling stability and predictability without intruding on the process of spirited driving. Whenever the system is actively enhancing the vehicle's stability, an indicator light flashes on the instrument panel. In addition, VSA's stability enhancement and traction control can be disabled with a cockpit switch while still leaving the Anti-lock Braking system fully functional.
WHEELS AND TIRES
The 3.2 TL wears 6.5-inch wide by 16-inch diameter
aluminum-alloy
wheels and 205/60R16 Michelin MXV4 all-season tires.
The sportier Type-S receives larger diameter 17-inch by 6.5-inch wide aluminum alloy wheels shod with 215/50R17 V-rated, all-season, high-performance Michelin MXM4 tires for outstanding cornering capability.

STYLING
The 3.2 TL combines sophisticated styling with a vibrant,
sporting
spirit. Distinctive and refined in its lines, the TL features a high
belt line and a cabin-forward silhouette that make a strong
styling
statement.
To create an intimate, personal feel, the greenhouse of the TL is visually distinct from the body's muscular lines. A strong shoulder to the upper body accentuates this feeling. High-gloss black accents on the window frames and B-pillars add a subtle upscale flair.
The front end of the TL sports an aggressive grille, fenders and bumpers, Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, and integrated fog lights as standard. In the rear, a crisp break at the top of the rear panel lends a sporting edge.
The TL is available in an array of colors including White Diamond Pearl, Satin Silver Metallic, Naples Gold Metallic, Firepepper Red Pearl, Aegean Blue Pearl, Eternal Blue Pearl, Noble Green Pearl, Anthracite Metallic, and Nighthawk Black Pearl.
In Fall of 2002, the TL will receive two new exterior colors with Desert Mist replacing Naples Gold and Royal Ruby replacing Firepepper Red.
PRECISE FIT AND FINISH
The world-class fit and finish of the TL is readily apparent at a
brief glance or under the closest scrutiny. The TL's doors, for
instance, are tuned with stiff structures, laser-welded door panel
blanks, special plastic-encapsulated door checkers and latches,
and
generous sound damping materials - all of which combine to
deliver a
high-quality "thunk" when the doors are closed. Special
power-window
motors increase window speed and reduce noise, while the
windows
themselves are sealed with reliable sash-type door structures.
UNIT BODY STRUCTURE
For the best-possible ride, handling, and NVH control, the TL unit
body was designed to provide maximum torsional and bending
rigidity
without adding excess weight.
Exceptional rigidity is achieved through the use of a high-strength cabin and ladder-type-subframe with large box-section rails and strategically placed reinforcements. This rigid structure allows the suspension mounting points to maintain a consistent position, resulting in improved handling precision, ride comfort and safety.
DOOR CONSTRUCTION
For enhanced weather sealing and reduced wind noise, the
highly rigid
door structures of the TL are designed with full-frame windows.
By
laser welding the door panels, steel panels of different thickness
can be used in the door - allowing the designers to use the
optimum
steel thickness in each area for a strong yet lightweight door.
NOISE, VIBRATION, AND HARSHNESS (NVH)
To ensure a quiet ride, insulation materials have been
incorporated
into the doors and gap-filling foam seals all roof-pillar cavities.
The TL utilizes triple door seals for reduced cabin noise while
extensive insulation is incorporated into the rear wheel-house
regions. The TL also utilizes a rigid steering-hanger beam,
steering-column shaft and accelerator cable bracket for reduced
steering wheel and throttle pedal vibration.
In addition, the outside rearview mirrors have also been shaped to pass cleanly through the air, reducing wind noise and contributing to an exceptionally quiet cabin environment.
XENON HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID)
HEADLIGHTS
For exceptionally clear visibility when driving at night, the TL
Type-S is equipped with reflector-type Xenon High Intensity
Discharge
(HID) headlights. These premium headlights are three times as
efficient as conventional halogen lamps (using less electrical
energy) and produce nearly double the illumination and bulb life.
The
brilliant beam delivered by the Xenon headlights improves
illumination by 45 percent on low beam (the TL uses
conventional
halogen high beams).
To prevent the battery drain that can occur if the headlights are accidentally left on, the TL is equipped with an auto-off feature that turns off the headlights 15 seconds after the driver's door is closed or the doors are locked.
ADVANCED MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY
The TL is crafted using an impressive array of sophisticated
technologies and advanced materials, including:
- Laser-welded inner door panel blanks for increased strength and decreased weight
- High-gloss B-pillars with high scratch resistance
- High-strength, dent-resistant steel doors
- Side-door protectors and side-sill garnishes use a durable body-color film for greater chip and scratch resistance
- Body-color roof molding
- Lightweight, fiberglass hood insulator
- Anti-acid-etch clear coat (dark colors)
- Chrome-plated, injection-molded door handles
- Two-thirds of plastic materials are polypropylene or polyethylene and are easily recyclable
WIND NOISE PERFORMANCE
To achieve low levels of wind noise, the designers of the TL
relied
upon extensive wind-tunnel development and computer
simulations. The
TL's body-panel shapes were carefully engineered to minimize
wind
noise, and the folding side-mirror shapes have been extensively
refined to bring wind noise to ultra-low levels.
2003 Acura 3.2 TL - Interior
CABIN OVERVIEW
The spacious interior of the TL has been designed to be attentive to
the needs of enthusiast drivers while also delivering maximum comfort
and convenience. From rich leather seating to fine wood-patterned
trim, the cabin exudes an ambiance of warmth and luxury. The
instrument panel is outfitted with large, analog gauges and all
essential controls are grouped within easy reach of the driver -
making the TL cockpit an ideal environment for spirited driving.
The TL Type-S features its own cockpit theme with special trim materials for an enhanced feel of sportiness.
STYLING
In designing the TL cabin, the interior designers looked to Pacific
Coast powerboats for their inspiration. Their muse can be readily
seen in the sweeping, wraparound cockpit design and the purposeful
instrument panel configuration. At the same time, the TL cabin offers
a highly personalized flavor, with controls designed for rewarding
tactile feedback and fine materials selected to enhance the inviting
ambiance.
INTERIOR ROOMINESS
With 110.5 cubic feet of interior volume, the TL ranks as a midsize
car - and one of the most spacious sedans in its class. To create
this roomy, five-passenger cabin environment, engineers capitalized
on the space efficiency provided by the TL's unit-body design and
compact, multi-link rear suspension
SEATS
The standard power front seats of the TL are designed to provide both
enduring comfort over long drives and secure support during spirited
driving maneuvers. The stitching pattern of the U.S.-sourced leather
was carefully planned to ensure that it remained comfortable during
extended cruises. The wide, contoured seats incorporate dual-density
backrests for a soothing and enveloping feel, and also include firm
side bolsters to hold the driver and front passenger in place during
high lateral-g cornering.
The driver's seat is eight-way power adjustable and linked to the 3.2 TL's keyless remote entry system. Linked by a memory system with the outside mirrors, it permits one of two preset configurations to be accessed at the touch of a button. The front passenger's seat is four-way adjustable.
The driver's seat includes a heated bottom cushion and backrest, while the passenger's seat offers a heated bottom cushion. Both front seats include 4-way adjustable headrests on the 3.2 TL and 2-way adjustable headrests on the TL Type-S. All five TL seating positions are equipped with three-point seat belts.
For enhanced ventilation and a sporty appearance, the seats in the Type-S are trimmed in perforated leather. The Type-S seats also feature deeper bolsters and added support for sporty driving.
INSTRUMENTATION
Keeping the driver informed at all times is a highly accurate,
micro-processor-controlled instrument cluster with displays for
engine speed, vehicle speed, outside air temperature, fuel level,
dual trip meter, and secured door signal. The large tachometer face
includes a bright LED digital display that indicates the current gear
position when the transmission is in its semi-manual SportShift mode.
Illuminated pointers on the analog instruments make the gauges easy
to read regardless of the amount of light in the cabin. The TL Type-S
includes a metallic-faced instrument cluster for a sportier cockpit
look.
MATERIALS
All of the materials used inside the TL cabin were carefully selected
to create an atmosphere of refinement and soothing luxury. The
instrument panel and door armrests are made with a special molding
process that creates a softer-feeling surface with a uniform surface
grain. The sides of the center console are backed with soft foam to
cushion the legs of the driver and the passenger. Wood-patterned
accents on the door panel and edges of the console warm the look of
the 3.2 TL interior.
AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL
For exceptional comfort and convenience, the TL is equipped with a
state-of-the-art, high-capacity, Automatic Climate Control System.
The system's large compressor and evaporator help provide extremely
rapid cabin-temperature correction while adjustable rear seat vents
positioned behind the center console help to cool the backseat
quickly and efficiently. The TL's heater is equally effective and
uses an aluminum heater core and the same quiet blower unit as the
air conditioning unit.
Controls on the dash allow the system to be overridden manually. When equipped with the available DVD-based Acura Satellite-Linked Navigation System, the override controls for the Automatic Climate Control System are incorporated into the computer-controlled, touchscreen LCD monitor.
MICRON AIR FILTRATION SYSTEM
To help ensure a clean, pollutant-free cabin environment, the TL's
automatic climate control system is complemented by a standard micron
air-filtration system that traps dust and pollen particles as small
as eight microns and bacteria as small as one micron.
ACURA SATELLITE-LINKED NAVIGATION SYSTEM
The DVD-based Acura Satellite-Linked Navigation System is available
as the only factory-installed option on the fully equipped 2003 Acura
TL. Like the similar system in the 3.5 RL flagship sedan, the TL's
unit utilizes a bright, easy-to-read LCD color touchscreen display in
the center dash, a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) receiver, an
on-board inertial guidance unit, and a DVD database to provide the
driver with route and navigation guidance for millions of
destinations across the continental United States.
Using GPS data received from orbiting satellites, plus information from the on-board inertial-guidance system, the Navigation System can determine the vehicle's precise location in seconds. Using the touchscreen display, the driver enters a destination and the Navigation System guides him there using clear audio voice cues and a detailed moving-map display. For exceptional convenience, the DVD database stores information on 3.7 million points of interest - including ATMs, service stations, movie theaters, restaurants, hotels, and more.
The large, 6-inch color LCD display in the dash offers picture-in-picture capability, so the driver can see both a detailed map and highlighted turning instructions simultaneously. The system can display the vehicle's current position at any time, while a balloon function allows the driver to summon the address of any location simply by selecting it on the map. The system can also search for a desired destination by phone number.
In addition to the moving-map display, the system highlights route directions with clear voice instructions. Eleven different volume settings are available, and for ease of use the system automatically mutes the audio system's front speakers whenever a voice instruction is given.
The DVD-ROM database includes mapping information for all freeway networks and every major metropolitan area in the United States. Updating the Navigation System is accomplished quickly and easily by simply changing DVD discs. Updated DVDs are published annually and are available through Acura for a nominal charge.
ONSTAR® IN-VEHICLE COMMUNICATIONS AND ASSISTANCE SERVICE
OnStar® is standard in all TL models fitted with the Acura
Satellite-Linked Navigation System. Providing an extra level of
security and convenience, OnStar can offer 24-hour emergency
assistance, accident notification, airbag deployment notification,
stolen vehicle tracking, door unlock command and vehicle tracking.
The OnStar activation button is located on the rearview mirror. Pressing the button provides quick access to a live OnStar advisor, any time day or night. Using input from orbiting GPS satellites, the OnStar advisor can easily pinpoint the location of the owner's vehicle to help provide assistance.
In the event of theft, subscribers need only contact the OnStar Center (after filing a police report) and provide a personal identification number. An OnStar advisor can then pinpoint the car and direct authorities to its exact location.
OnStar-equipped TLs come with a free one year subscription to the Safe and Sound Plan. In addition, TL owners can choose to upgrade (additional cost) to either the Directions and Connections Plan or the Luxury and Leisure Plan. The Directions and Connections Plan adds route support, online concierge and convenience services and ride assist. The Luxury and Leisure Plan adds personal concierge services and other benefits (Med-Net fee is also waved for the first year). The optional Personal-Calling Package, which includes wireless phone and "Virtual Advisor" Internet services, is available as part of both plans for an additional charge. The Luxury and Leisure Plan adds personal concierge services and other benefits.
PREMIUM ACURA/BOSE® MUSIC SYSTEM
For a car as sophisticated and luxurious as the TL, only the finest
of audio systems was considered appropriate. Thus, the TL features a
standard Acura/Bose® Music System custom-engineered to take maximum
advantage of the unique acoustics of the TL cabin.
Using data from such advanced measuring tools as microphone-equipped mannequins, Bose engineers precisely located each of the system's five speakers for optimum fidelity. Bose equalization circuitry automatically maintains proper tonal balance at all times, yielding a natural, lifelike musical experience no matter which seating position the passenger occupies.
Anchoring this remarkable music system is a 9-inch Bose Neodymium woofer in the rear package shelf. Using a rare earth, neodymium iron boron magnet, this sophisticated speaker produces powerful, accurate bass and impressive output from a remarkably slim and compact package.
Complementing the Bose speaker array is a new 6-disc, in-dash CD changer that eliminates the need for a separate trunk-mounted changer unit or CD cartridges. Though similar in appearance to a conventional single-disc in-dash CD player, the Acura/Bose in-dash changer stores up to 6 compact discs behind the flush-mounted faceplate. Operating just like a conventional trunk-mounted unit, the Acura/Bose changer can automatically shuffle tracks within one CD at random and provides hours of uninterrupted listening pleasure. For maximum flexibility, the Acura/Bose head unit also includes a cassette deck. To allow the driver to remain focused on the road ahead, the radio stations, CD changer, and system volume can be conveniently operated using controls mounted on the steering wheel.
POWER GLASS MOONROOF
For those occasions when the driver wants to enjoy open-air driving,
the TL includes a standard power operated glass moonroof that can be
tilted-up or fully opened. The moonroof's trim, efficient packaging,
with sliding sunshade, ensures that it does not infringe upon the
TL's abundant headroom.
MULTIPLEX DATA BUS
The three separate CPUs in the TL-which control such functions as
warning systems, intermittent wipers, and the auto-headlight
system-communicate with each other via a multiplex data bus, which
requires considerably less wiring and is more reliable than
conventional systems.
KEYLESS REMOTE ENTRY SYSTEM WITH MEMORY FEATURE
A standard keyless remote entry system allows the driver and
passenger doors to be unlocked by pressing a button on the key fob. A
"panic button" on the keyless remote activates the security siren and
flashes the headlights to summon assistance in an emergency. The
keyless entry remotes also include a trunk-release button for easy
access.
Two separate keyless remotes allow two different drivers to quickly customize the driving position to their preferred positions. When remote number one is pressed to unlock the door, the driver's seat will automatically reset itself to that driver's memorized seat position. Similarly, when remote number two is pressed, the driver's seat will automatically move to the second memory setting. The memory function may be turned off without affecting other remote entry system features.
TRUNK STORAGE
Thanks in large part to the compact dimensions of the TL's multi-link
rear suspension, the trunk volume is an impressive 14.3 cubic feet.
The trunk is designed with a wide opening and a low lift-over height
for easy loading and unloading of cargo. To carry long items such as
snow skis, the trunk features a lockable, flip-down pass-through door
in the rear seat. Other trunk conveniences include a
multiple-attachment cargo net, a jack and toolbox in a closed
compartment, a storage compartment on the trunk's left side, an
overhead hook for securing plastic grocery bags, and a tether with a

2003 Acura 3.2 TL - Safety
OVERVIEW
Because passenger safety was of paramount importance in the creation of the TL, a comprehensive array of occupant-protection systems and features are included as standard equipment. The TL Type-S is equipped with a standard Acura Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system, which integrates the Traction Control System (TCS) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) functions with stability control to enhance driver control during sudden maneuvers.Should an accident prove unavoidable, the TL is designed to protect its passengers with a sophisticated repertoire of safety technologies. Front and rear crumple zones, analyzed and developed on super-computers, are designed to deform progressively in an impact, helping to absorb and dissipate collision forces before they can intrude on the passenger compartment. Supplementing these and other structural systems are standard dual-stage, dual threshold front air bags and a driver's and front passenger's side air bag system.
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)
The ABS system in the 3.2 TL is a three-channel design that modulates braking power to the front wheels independently and to the rear wheels in tandem - enhancing driver control during maximum-effort stops on slippery road surfaces. The TL Type-S is fitted with a special four-channel ABS system that works in conjunction with the car's standard Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system. When braking in a straight line, the TL Type-S ABS system functions in the same three-channel mode as the 3.2 TL's. When the Type-S system senses high cornering forces, however, it automatically switches to a four-channel mode - allowing the ABS system to exploit the weight transfer to the outside of the vehicle in a turn and apply higher brake pressure to the outer rear wheel for enhanced braking performance and directional stability.
TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEM (TCS)
To enhance traction while increasing all-weather usability, the TL features a standard Traction Control System (TCS). Operating at vehicle speeds below 18 miles per hour, the system can apply one or both front brakes as necessary to control wheel spin. Because the system provides independent drive-wheel control, it also greatly enhances performance when accelerating on split-traction surfaces.VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA) SYSTEM
For enhanced driver control during hard cornering and accident-avoidance maneuvers, the TL Type-S is equipped with a standard Acura Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system similar to the system first unveiled in the 2000 model year on the 3.5 RL flagship sedan.Integrating TCS, ABS, and stability enhancement processes, the VSA system constantly monitors eight vehicle sensors that compare the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. If the actual response falls outside a calculated response range - i.e., the vehicle is beginning to understeer severely - VSA automatically attempts to intervene with corrective action. In the case of understeer (where the vehicle continues in a straight line rather than turning), VSA applies braking to the inside front wheel and reduces engine power - helping to bring the car back onto the driver's intended line. In the event of oversteer (which can lead to a spin), VSA applies braking to the outside front wheel to counter the unintended yawing tendency.
Because driver control is so crucial to the enjoyment of a fine sporting automobile, the Acura VSA system has been carefully designed to add stability and handling poise without negating the car's dynamic responsiveness.
An indicator light on the instrument panel alerts the driver whenever the VSA system is actively enhancing the vehicle's stability. VSA can be disabled using a cockpit switch. The standard ABS system remains fully functional.
SAFETY STRUCTURE
From the very outset, the TL's "safety cage" was designed to provide the structural strength to meet safety regulations. Using super computers to simulate a variety of crash situations, engineers were able to study the impact forces on a "virtual car" to supplement their real-life prototype testing.Among the innovations developed as a result of this testing are straight-section frame box rails with large cross-sections. In a frontal impact, these rails feed impact energy directly into the main frame structure - without the need for stiffeners at changes in cross-section.
Helping the TL exceed federal head-impact safety regulations are energy-absorbing roof-pillar garnishes and a roof lining designed to help reduce injury to passengers. To handle offset-impact energy, reinforcements are located at the roof side rails, the side sills, the A-pillars, and the front and side frame members.
For added protection in the event of a collision from the side, the B-pillars of the TL are stiffened, a substantial cross member runs transversely across the floor pan, a tubular brace connects the two A-pillars inside the instrument panel, a bulkhead is positioned at the back of the passenger cabin, and the rear doors are fitted with special catcher mechanisms to restrict intrusion into the passenger compartment. Each front door is equipped with twin side impact beams, while each rear door features a single beam. All four doors have a stamped-steel stiffening structure at the tops of the door panels, as well as impact-absorbing door-lining pads positioned near the occupants.
DUAL-STAGE, DUAL THRESHOLD FRONT AIRBAGS
The TL is equipped with dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger. These airbags are designed to minimize the potential for airbag injury while providing head and chest protection for the occupants in the event of a collision. The TL's front airbags can deploy at one of two rates depending on the severity of a crash. During a lower speed collision, the airbag inflators are triggered in sequence, resulting in slower overall airbag deployment with less initial force. During a higher speed collision, both inflators operate simultaneously for full, immediate inflation, to correspond with the greater impact force.
The driver's airbag is located in the steering wheel hub and the passenger's airbag is located on top of the dash. As in all Acura automobiles, the front passenger's airbag is designed to deploy upward toward the windshield and then back toward the occupant. This provides a large cushion to help protect the front passenger.
SIDE AIR BAG SYSTEM
The TL features seat-mounted side air bags for the driver and front seat passenger. The front passenger's seat is equipped with an innovative system designed to prevent injury to a small child or small-statured adult by preventing side air bag deployment if they lean into the side air bag deployment path. Seven sensors in the passenger seatback determine the height and position of the occupant to assist the system in determining if it is safe to deploy the side air bag. If the passenger is in the deployment path of the side air bag, the system will prevent the side air bag from inflating. When the passenger returns to an upright seating position, the side air bag will reactivate so it can deploy and protect the passenger in a side impact.FRONT SEATBELT PRETENSIONERS
The TL is equipped with standard driver and front passenger seatbelt pretensioners. A device located in the seatbelt retractor mechanism tightens the seatbelt to help keep the occupant firmly in the seat - further enhancing the effectiveness of the seatbelts during a collision.LOWER ANCHORS AND TETHERS FOR CHILDREN (LATCH) SYSTEM
The 2003 TL includes the Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system on the rear seat. The LATCH system features ready-to-use attachment points at each of the three rear seating positions allowing compatible child safety seats to be installed without using the vehicle's seat belt system. Using the LATCH system, child seats may be attached in two separate configurations: one seat may be attached in the center seating position, or two seats may be attached concurrently, with one placed at each of the outboard positions. The LATCH system simplifies child seat installation when an owner installs a LATCH-compatible child seat.XENON HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID) HEADLIGHTS
For exceptional visibility when driving at night, the TL is equipped with standard reflector-type Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights. These premium headlights are three times as efficient as conventional halogen lamps (using less electrical energy) and produce nearly twice the illumination and more than double the bulb life. The brilliant beam delivered by the Xenon headlights increases illumination by 45 percent on low beam (the TL uses the HID lamps and conventional halogen lamps for high beam illumination).2003 Acura 3.2 TL - Manufacturing
