Acura 2005 Model Year Change Summary

2005 is an exciting year for Acura with the addition of the all-new RL luxury performance sedan completing the revitalization of its sedan lineup. The all-new RL takes Acura performance to its highest level yet with a 300-horsepower V-6 engine, a Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system that can send 70 percent of available torque to the outside rear wheel, and an assortment of leading-edge technology including North America's first standard, factory-installed real time traffic information system. Acura's new Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, which helps deliver even better protection for vehicle occupants, also makes its debut on this exciting new model.

The RSX sports coupe receives significant enhancements, which provide even more precise handling without sacrificing ride comfort. The high-performance Type-S model boasts an additional 10 horsepower while both models benefit from new styling and refined chassis that include optimized suspension, braking and steering systems.

Other Acura models receive exciting changes as well. The MDX luxury SUV receives standard XM® Satellite Radio, a faster navigation system with increased functionality, a larger fuel tank and an available HandsFreeLink wireless phone interface, while the TSX sports sedan gets an assortment of new features including standard XM Satellite Radio, a power adjustable passenger seat, and heated door mirrors.

RL
For 2005, Acura's top-of-the-line sedan is dramatically redesigned and re-engineered. Featuring the most powerful engine ever in an Acura production vehicle, an innovative all-wheel drive system and the first North American application of real time traffic information, the RL is designed to compete head on with other leading luxury performance sedans from Europe and Japan. It is the first Acura to feature the innovative ACE body structure, which helps keep occupants safe during a frontal collision, and a Keyless Access System, which allows RL owners to open the doors and trunk and start the car without using a key.

RSX
Since its debut in July of 2001, the RSX sports coupe has built a steady and growing demand among youthful driving enthusiasts and in the important "tuner" market. Acura's entry sports coupe, now a seasoned veteran in Acura's lineup, continues to deliver a strong mix of i-VTEC™ performance, sports car handling, quality and refinement. It comes in two versions, the 160-horsepower RSX and the 210-horsepower RSX Type-S. Both provide powerful, DOHC engines featuring Acura's innovative i-VTEC technology, sport-tuned chassis and suspension systems and a long list of standard features. For 2005, the RSX features several significant upgrades including:

Powertrain (Type-S only)

  • Engine modifications that boost the horsepower of the Type-S model to 210 at 7800 rpm
  • High performance camshafts

  • Large diameter exhaust pipe
  • High-flow catalytic converter
  • 6-speed transmission optimized with a lower final gear ratio for quicker acceleration and carbon synchronizers replacing brass on 5th and 6th gears for a smoother shift feel

  • More rigid stabilizer bars (front and back for Type-S, front for RSX)

MDX
One of the most sought-after luxury SUVs on the road today, the Acura MDX continues to rank at the top of its class. Refusing to rest on the its laurels, Acura each year has made several key enhancements designed to make the MDX even better and allow it to maintain its position as a benchmark in the luxury SUV category. For 2005, significant changes to the MDX include:

TSX
Initially forecast to sell 15,000 units a year, the TSX sports sedan far exceeded that number, and based on strong demand, is forecast to sell 30,000 units in 2004. The TSX continues to sell well, firmly establishing itself as an important component of Acura's revitalized sedan lineup. For 2005, the TSX receives several important enhancements including:

  • XM® Satellite Radio
  • Heated door mirrors
  • 4-way adjustable power passenger seat
  • Illuminated steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise control switches

TL
The 2004 TL performance luxury sedan debuted in October of 2003 as an all-new model and since that time it has been Acura's top-selling vehicle. Equipped with a 270- horsepower V-6 engine, track-tuned suspension, an available 6-speed manual transmission, aggressive styling and a ground-breaking DVD-Audio system, the TL quickly became a dominant force in its segment, competing head-to-head with BMW, Lexus and Audi. Several safety enhancements were made to the 2005 model to comply with FMVSS 208 standards including:

  • Drivers seat position sensor helps determine optimum deployment rate for front airbag
  • Weight sensors in the front passenger seat disable the front airbag if the occupant weighs less than 65 pounds

NSX
As an icon in the supercar category, the NSX's unique mid-engine design, aluminum construction and high performance powertrain continue to make it a favorite of discriminating sports car enthusiasts.
