The Acura Division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today introduced its high-performance Integra GS-R, which features a 160- horsepower, NSX-inspired engine. The addition of the Integra GS-R further broadens a full line of vehicles for Acura, which just recorded its best sales year. The division recorded sales of 143,708 units during the 1991 calendar year, up 3.8 percent from 1990; these figures reaffirm the position of Acura as a leader in performance/luxury imports. As of December 31, 1991, Acura has sold a total of 714,730 automobiles, since starting operations in March of 1986.

The Integra GS-R is the latest addition to the diverse line of Acura automobiles, ranging from the spirited Integra sports sedans to the acclaimed NSX sports car, the only all-aluminum production car in the world. Like all Acura models, the high-performance Integra GS-R incorporates a number of features inspired by direct involvement in Formula One racing. By using the Grand Prix circuit as a proving ground for new technology, Acura can quickly bring the latest engineering advancements to the performance luxury marketplace.
The Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system used in the Integra GS-R was first introduced in the Acura NSX. The VTEC design allows an unprecedented level of power in a light, compact engine package. The Integra GS-R features a 1.7-liter engine which produces 160- horsepower, the highest horsepower per liter of any normally aspirated automobile sold in the United States. The engineering team responsible for the GS-R engine is the same team that built the legendary 1.5-liter, 1000- horsepower Honda engines that dominated the turbo era of Formula One racing.
